Austin Almost Smoke-free

Apparently, 8 restaurants have smoking permits that are being grandfathered in after the smoking ban goes into effect September 1st. You’ll be able to smoke in Shoal Creek Saloon and 7 other establishments until August 31, 2012. It seems unnecessary for the city to waive their permit fees, though; they should be able to name their prices as far as smokers are concerned.

Retirement nosedive

Last week, a federal judge approved the termination of the United Airlines pension plans. While that doesn’t completely leave all the current and former employees out in the cold, it does mean that the federal government (i.e. taxpayers) will be assuming the obligations of the airline and paying substantially lower benefits to the employees. Yet another indication of how great it would be to privatize Social Security… What could possibly go wrong?
